One of our most recent projects is the implementation of PID Gas Monitors for the fume extraction company, Climavent. Their client required these PID detectors in fume extraction systems to check the state of the carbon filters.
Successful implementation of IGD’s PID gas monitors opened the doors for further opportunities to enhance Climavent’s gas safety.
Read on below for more details about how the Climavent team became detectably better in their gas safety.
Who are Climavent?
Climavent are a company specialising in the manufacturing, installation and servicing of dust and fume extraction equipment. They provide their products and services to a wide range of industries including (but not limited to) pharmaceutical, chemical, manufacturing and engineering. From standard dust extraction booths to mobile units, filters and benches, Climavent’s huge range of solutions guarantee that you can find the ideal solution for your business. And with full servicing, installation and support straight from the manufacturer.
Climavent are fully committed to helping each company they work with in getting the ideal solution, creating a safer work environment for everyone. Environmental sustainability is at the forefront of their practices, with all their dust and fume waste being disposed of ethically and ensuring they reduce their carbon footprint in the process.
Being able to work with a company that shared the same ethos of environmentally friendly practices and providing detectably better safety solutions to all clients naturally drew IGD and Climavent to each other. With IGD’s previous experience in the fume extraction industry, we were able to provide the perfect solution for Climavent’s gas detection needs.

What are the Hazards of this Industry?
Fume extraction companies work with a wide-range of industries, they often come into contact with asphyxiant, toxic and flammable gases.
One of Climavent’s main products is a welding fume extraction system. Welding fumes consist of NOX, Carbon monoxide, Ozone and a myriad of carcinogenic VOCs, creating huge risks and hazards. Climavent also work with the steel production industry, another hotbed for carcinogenic and toxic VOCs as well as dust and toxic gas hazards.
Dust and Fume extraction are the first line of defence against gas, vapour, and dust hazards, whereas gas detection is put into place where these systems fail.
Gas detection and extraction systems often work well in conjunction with one another.
Why did Climavent need a PID Gas Monitor?
Climavents client required a paint fume extraction system due to their onsite HVAC system filtering air from departments being painted and distributing it to other parts of the building. Toluene, Xylene and Polyurethane (a source of VOC emissions) are often the main components in the creation of paints (Croner-I 2022). These VOCs are highly toxic and carcinogenic, and with a STEL of as low as 100ppm for both Toluene and Xylene, it is vital to implement a safety system to minimise their impact to personnel. Therefore, this client fitted their paint fume extraction system with a PID gas monitor.
The PID gas monitor was put into place to help inform the client when the carbon filters within the device needed changing. The carbon filters were put into place to help reduce the number of VOCs emitted once extracted. Thus, the PID gas monitor would give a good indication as to when these were end of life.
The original supplier’s PID gas monitor caused several issues for Climavent. In addition to long lead times and short sensor lifetimes, the PID gas monitor pumps continually failed.
This resulted in resulted client replacing their pumps and PCBs every six months, hiking up the cost of maintaining their system. Climavent took the initiative in finding a new device for their client to help reduce upkeep costs and the inconvenience of constant replacements.
IGD’s PID Gas Monitor Solution
IGD and Climavent are both located in Greater Manchester, which created the perfect opportunity to complete this project. Being able to match IGD and Climavents attitudes on working with and improving the local community.
IGD provided Climavent with the TOC-750S sampler and revolutionary PID sensor, offering a 30,000-hour lamp life. A 200% increase in lamp life (compared to the market standard) offering a significantly longer operational life.
This coupled with our 10-year warranty on electronics* drastically reduced the cost and frequency of replacements for Climavent and their client. Providing a lower cost system without compromising on quality.
The TOC-750S incorporates our unique piezo pump technology, featuring virtually no moving parts, valves or pump seals, making it silent in operation. Our TOC-750S PID also features our industry-first auto-zero function.
Providing unparalleled zero stable for the sensor, allowing for low alarm and PPM levels for VOC detection, making it more applicable for a wider range of PID gas monitor applications.
Additionally, our latest PID gas monitor features a non-electrode UV lamp, reducing the effects of sputtering and thus providing an accurate and reliable sensor throughout its life.

What was the outcome?
Upon agreement of the solution, the IGD team invited Climavent to our in-house training facility, providing free training to help guide them in the installation of this product. Once the product was ready to be installed, the IGD service team set off to site to provide support to the Climavent team.
Climavent were hugely impressed with 750S and our range of ATEX EMS samplers, which feature no moving parts for the pump, providing a longer lasting and easy to clean PID gas monitor solution for their client. What’s more, Climavent were very happy with the quick lead time coupled with the free support and training IGD provided to the Climavent team. This took the previous hassle out of maintaining their system.
Soon after fitting the PID gas monitor system, Matthew Harrison, the Sales Manager at Climavent Systems, spoke with us briefly about the success of the installation and the future of Climavent with IGD: “After contacting IGD, Hal and Andrew invited me to the showroom to view the system in operation. Their technical knowledge gave me peace of mind that the solution would work. The products were easy to install and commission and have been running on-site for several months. Following on from the successful initial project, we have received further training from Ben and are in the process of installing another nine systems.”
