Total Peace of Mind
Getting gas detection isn’t a choice. Who you get it from is.
When it comes to car park gas detection you need a system that will ensure that you are fully compliant with all hazardous and flammable substance regulations, and the best way to do that is with SafePark from IGD.
Diverse Gas Risks in Car Parks
Car parks present various gas risks and you need a gas detection system that can monitor them all. This is the only way of ensuring that your application meets all legal requirements. The following gases can all be found in car parks:
- Carbon monoxide can be found in all car parks and typically occurs as a by-product of incomplete combustion.
- It’s highly toxic, odourless and colourless.
- Over time even low-level exposure can pose serious health risks.
- Carbon monoxide poisoning is the most common type of fatal air poisoning in many countries.
- Nitrogen dioxide and Nitric oxide are both colourless, toxic gases that can be found in the majority of car parks.
- They are a by-product of combustion in diesel vehicles, making them a particular issue in car parks with loading bays.
- NO₂ is virtually odourless but NO has a sharp, sweet smell.
Understanding Car Park Gas Detection Laws
Measures must be taken to ensure that air quality is preserved and the only way to do so is by mitigating these gas risks. Gas hazards must be managed according to the following regulations and IGD systems meet all following requirements:
COSHH
The Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations mandate that employers evaluate the dangers associated with using hazardous substances. This evaluation must cover plans for handling accidents, incidents, or emergencies, including significant spillages. The Healthy and Safety Executive (HSE) published a document under COSHH called EH40/2005 Workplace Exposure Limits. It covers legislated toxic gases in the UK, setting out legal 8-hour (time-weighted exposure) and 15-minute exposure limits for each gas. Find more information about these exposure limits on the HSE website.
DSEAR
The Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations mandate the evaluation and management of the potential risk to personnel from fires or explosions caused by hazardous substances in the workplace. You are required to mitigate or minimise these risks to the extent that is feasibly possible. DSEAR regulations mandate that flammable atmospheres must be avoided by ensuring that flammable gas concentrations do not exceed 25% of their Lower Explosive Limit (LEL).
Total Peace of Mind with SafePark
Compliance with standards is not an option. To avoid legal repercussions you must be equipped with a gas detection system that adheres to these standards. These regulations are specific to the UK, but all regions will have their own regulations and guidance on air quality.
The SafePark product range combines pioneering 2-Wire addressable technology with our state-of-the-art long-life sensors, to ensure that your car park is fully compliant with all relevant regulations.
As with any application, compliance with regulations isn’t the only goal. Our aim is always to keep people safe and to save you money while we’re doing it. Gas levels in a car park are mitigated via a ventilation system. However, gas levels in a car park naturally vary throughout the day depending on usage. In the mornings and evenings gas levels rise as people arrive at and leave the premises. Ventilation systems kick in to reduce gas levels back below the legal limits, but leaving those ventilation systems running when safe levels have been established is a waste of money.
How Does it Work?
The SafePark system varies your ventilation by turning your fans on when gas levels rise and reducing the ventilation when safe levels have been re-established.
Our systems work alongside BMS and ventilation systems, seamlessly integrating into your overall car park safety setup. 2-Wire addressable technology equips you with remote monitoring, event logs, and cloud-based data acquisition and our 2-core cable makes installation simple, and cost-effective. Our long-life sensors provide you with industry-leading, reliable and immediate monitoring for all relevant gas threats.
With over a century of innovation under our belts, you can rely on IGD to provide you with the ultimate gas detection system ensuring that your clients are safe, that you’re adhering to all legal requirements and, of course, that you’re saving as much money as possible.
